Dizzy and Eye Strain Through Binoculars? Your Interpupillary Distance Is Probably Off
"Are binoculars just not meant for long viewing? Why do I feel dizzy after two minutes?" Before you blame the binoculars, consider this: your interpupillary distance is probably set wrong. Your two eyes are each looking at a slightly different image, and your brain is forcing them together. No wonder you are tired.
Step one: set the interpupillary distance. Hold both barrels and swing them apart or together until the two circles you see through the left and right eyes merge into one complete circle. When the spacing is right, you will notice the image suddenly click into a single circle, with no dark edges and no double image. Adult interpupillary distance usually falls between 56 and 74mm, and most binoculars cover that range. If a child will be using them, check that the minimum interpupillary distance is small enough.
Step two: check the compensation. If the spacing is correct and you still feel dizzy, go back to the focusing steps from the previous article and check whether the right eyepiece compensation is set properly. A mismatch in sharpness between the two eyes is the second most common cause of dizziness.
Step three: watch your viewing time. Even with everything set correctly, using binoculars continuously for more than half an hour the first time will still tire you out. The focusing muscles in your eyes are adapting to a new way of seeing, which is normal, just like wearing a new pair of glasses for the first time. During the adjustment period, take a break every 10 minutes.
In short: merge the two circles first (interpupillary distance), then balance the two eyes (compensation), and the dizziness will basically go away.
