BK4 vs BK7 Prisms: The Hidden Divide in Binocular Brightness
On product pages, the words "BK4 prism" are often highlighted in red as a selling point. Many buyers wonder: is this one-letter difference really worth paying more for?
The job of a prism in binoculars is to fold the light path, turning an upside-down image right side up. It is what allows binoculars to be short and correctly oriented. BK4 and BK7 are two grades of optical glass: BK4 has a higher refractive index (about 1.57 versus 1.51), and the key difference lies in the critical angle for total internal reflection.
Think of it this way: light inside a prism travels along a path of mirror-like bounces. BK7 has a larger critical angle, so some rays arriving at a slant never meet the conditions for total internal reflection and leak out through the side of the prism. That leaked light is lost. BK4 has a smaller critical angle, so nearly all of the light in the same path is reflected, making better use of the available brightness.
In real-world viewing, the difference is subtle on a bright day. In low light, such as dusk, under tree cover, or indoors, a BK4 image is noticeably brighter and clearer. The advantage of BK4 comes through most clearly in Porro prism designs. Put a BK7 Porro and a BK4 Porro at the same price side by side at dusk, and the gap is visible to the naked eye.
How to tell them apart: reputable brands state the prism material clearly on the product page, so be cautious when a spec sheet only says something vague like "high-transmission prism." There is also a simple trick: look at the exit pupil. Point the binoculars at a bright area and look in through the objective lenses. BK4 shows a complete circular spot of light, while BK7 has cut corners, a square-ish dark edge.
In short: BK4 is the dividing line for low-light image quality. At the same price, choose BK4 first. If the product page does not dare to state the prism material, assume BK7.
