How to Use a Monocular Telescope with Compass and Ranging: Marine and Surveying Applications

There is a type of monocular telescope with an extra compass window on the body and a ring of graduations in the field of view. This is a professional monocular with compass and ranging functions, a classic setup for mariners and a valuable tool for surveying, line inspection, and outdoor navigation.

Let's start with the compass. When you observe, a bearing scale appears in the field of view (or in a small window on the body), and the reading gives the target's azimuth relative to magnetic north. How to use it: aim at the target, wait for the compass scale to stabilize, and read the degrees. Remember that this is a magnetic bearing; to convert to true north, add the local magnetic declination (in eastern China, it is roughly 5 to 11 degrees west).

Now for reticle ranging. The horizontal scale in the center of the field of view is a mil scale. Using the principle of similar triangles, you can estimate distance with the formula: distance = target's actual size divided by the mil reading times 1000. For example, if a lighthouse is known to be 20 meters tall and occupies 40 mils on the reticle, then the distance = 20 divided by 40 times 1000 = 500 meters.

The accuracy of this ranging method depends on two conditions: a precise estimate of the target's size and a careful reading of the mil scale. This makes it especially suitable for marine scenarios, where the dimensions of beacons, buoys, and vessels can be looked up in tables. For unfamiliar targets in the field, accuracy will be lower, but it is still adequate as a distance estimation tool.

Before use, two things must be done. First, calibrate the compass. Find two landmarks with known bearings (measurable on a map), aim at the first one, and compare the reading with the true value to determine the deviation. Most models have a compass adjustment screw on the body to zero it out. Second, confirm the reticle's unit of measurement. Different manufacturers use mils or angular minutes (degrees), and the constant in the formula differs, so don't mix them up.

For routine maintenance, note that the compass is a magnetically sensitive device. Keep it away from magnets, speakers, and induction cookers, or the compass may become magnetized and drift, making readings permanently inaccurate. When used on a steel hull, readings must be corrected with the local deviation table, which is a basic skill in marine navigation.

Who is this for? People working at sea, power line inspectors (measuring distance to towers), geological surveyors, and outdoor orienteering enthusiasts. Casual viewers do not need to pay a premium for a compass function. It means a higher price and more delicate maintenance, so choose according to your needs.
