On Taobao product pages, strings of numbers like "10x25" and "8x42" leave plenty of buyers scratching their heads, and the question customer service hears most often is simply, "What does this mean?" The answer is straightforward once you break it down: the first number is the magnification, and the second is the diameter of the objective lens (the front lens), measured in millimeters.
Take 10x25 as an example: the object appears 10 times larger, and the objective lens is 25mm across. Magnification determines how much the image is enlarged, while objective diameter determines how much light gets in. A larger objective gathers more light and produces a brighter image, which makes a clear difference in low light; a smaller objective keeps the body more compact, but brightness suffers.
From this you can work out relative brightness almost by instinct. A 25mm objective paired with 10x magnification gives an exit pupil of just 2.5mm, which is fine in daylight but struggles at dusk.
