How Far Can a Night Vision Device See? The Three Distance Standards: Detection, Recognition and Identification
"How far can a night vision device see?" is the number one question about this kind of product. As with "how far can binoculars see," the answer needs to be standardized, and the industry does this by grading targets according to how clearly they can be made out.
The three-level standard (the Johnson criteria): detection, meaning you can tell a target is there at all, just a dot; recognition, meaning you can judge what type of target it is, whether a person, a vehicle or an animal; and identification, meaning you can make out the details and tell exactly who or which model it is. With the same night vision device, the distance for each level can differ by a factor of three to five. The "observation distance" a manufacturer puts on the box is usually the detection distance, the most optimistic figure of the three.
Order-of-magnitude reference points (low-light night vision device, no illumination, starlight conditions): a Gen 1 tube detects at 50-100m and recognizes at 30-50m; a Gen 2 tube detects at 200-300m and recognizes at 100m; a Gen 3 tube detects at 300-600m. An infrared illuminator can transform the experience: with active illumination out to 30-150m, the image goes from a faint shadow to something clearly visible. But once the illuminator is on, you are giving off light yourself. That is fine for watching animals, and fatal for staying concealed while you observe.
Three variables affect distance: ambient light (a full moon versus a moonless overcast night is a difference of more than three times), objective lens size and magnification (a larger objective gathers more light), and target contrast (an animal stands out far more against snow than against grass). So the same night vision device performs completely differently on a summer meadow and a winter snowfield.
When buying, automatically divide the manufacturer's "up to XXX meters" by three, which is closer to the real recognition distance. Rather than studying the specs, ask one question: "In a moonless environment, at what distance can I recognize a human-shaped target?" Ask it like a professional and the customer service agent will not dare to answer carelessly.
In one sentence: night vision distance is divided into detection, recognition and identification, and taking a third of the advertised figure is normal. On a moonless night, being able to identify a human shape at 100 meters already means a good device.
