Understanding Lens Coatings: What FMC Fully Multi-Coated Really Means
Where glass meets air, light gets reflected. On an uncoated lens, each air-to-glass surface throws away roughly 4% of the light passing through it. A binocular contains more than a dozen such surfaces inside, so without any coating, more than half the light can be gone before it ever reaches your eyes.
Coating works by depositing a transparent film of a precisely controlled thickness onto the lens surface. Through optical interference, that film cancels out reflections and lets more light pass through. A single layer can bring reflection at one surface down to about 1.5%, while multi-coating (MC) pushes it below 0.5%.
FMC, or fully multi-coated, means every air-to-glass surface on every lens element carries a multi-layer coating, rather than just the objective lens and eyepiece getting cosmetic treatment. It is one of the key markers separating toy-grade optics from professional-grade ones.
How can you judge a coating by eye? Look at the reflection on the lens. A good coating shows an even, subdued mix of dark blue, dark green and magenta, with weak reflections. If the reflection is bright, harsh or washed-out white, the coating is thin or missing altogether.
A simple rule when buying: check the specs for FMC, and judge by eye by how dark the lens reflection looks. The darker and more subdued it appears, the more light the optics will let through.
