ED Low-Dispersion Glass: Why Professional Spotting Scopes Use It
When white light passes through a lens, each wavelength bends by a different amount. Blue light refracts more, red light less, so they never meet at quite the same focal point. That is chromatic aberration, or dispersion.
The effect is easy to spot. At high magnification, look at a high-contrast edge such as a branch or a power line, and you will see a purple-red or green fringe along it. The image looks soft and washed out.
ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass uses a special material formula that shrinks the difference in refractive index between wavelengths to a minimum, bringing red and blue light almost to the same point. The result is clean, sharp edges across the frame.
So when is ED worth paying for? Birdwatchers picking out feather detail on a distant bird, shooters reading bullet impacts at the range, astronomers studying the edge of the lunar disc. In these high-magnification, fine-detail situations, the improvement from ED is immediately visible. For everyday scenery and watching a game, a standard achromatic lens is already enough.
