When choosing a monocular telescope, most people habitually look at just two numbers: magnification and objective lens diameter. But what truly determines how comfortable the view feels is a parameter that is often overlooked, the eyepiece diameter.
Eyepiece diameter determines the size of the circular image your eye sees. Looking through a small eyepiece, say one in the 15mm class, is like peering through a keyhole. With a large eyepiece, 18-20mm or above, the edges of the image recede beyond your field of view, creating an immersive, full-frame sensation that the industry calls a panoramic field of view.
This difference cannot be appreciated from a spec sheet, but once you compare the two side by side, there is no going back. A large eyepiece feels close to looking at the whole scene with the naked eye, and your eyes stay completely relaxed. A small eyepiece, by contrast, forces you to hunt for that little circular window, and the muscles around your eyes tire noticeably during extended use.
Another benefit of a large eyepiece is tolerance for pupil alignment. If your eye drifts slightly off the optical axis, a large eyepiece still holds a complete image, while a small one immediately shows black corners. This makes a real, tangible difference in bumpy environments such as in a car or on a boat, and when quickly locking onto a target.
The technical trade-off of a large eyepiece is that it requires a larger lens group and a more complex multi-element design, which drives up both cost and weight. That is why it is commonly found on mid-range to high-end monocular telescopes and spotting scopes. Judging is easy: check the eyepiece diameter in the spec sheet, or simply look at the physical size of the eyepiece rubber ring, which is visible to the naked eye.
Buying advice depends on intended use. For a pocket-sized scope you carry everywhere, a small eyepiece is acceptable since portability comes first. For a primary observation scope used for birdwatching, surveying or long viewing sessions, add eyepiece diameter to your must-check list, starting at 18mm and preferably 20mm. The extra money you spend will pay you back every time you observe for an extended period.
