Watching Ships and Islands by the Sea: Choosing a Monocular for Coastal Viewing
On a trip to the coast, plenty of people find themselves thinking: if only I had a telescope, I could make out that ship, that lighthouse, that island out there. The seaside really is one of the best settings for a telescope, with open water, nothing in the way and targets far off in the distance.
Just how far away are those targets? Coastal freighters usually sit a few kilometers out, lighthouses start at five or six kilometers, and to the naked eye you see nothing but a silhouette. That is where magnification starts to matter in a practical way. At 10x, a ship three kilometers away shows the outline of its superstructure; beyond 20x, you can pick out details on the masts and funnel.
For a monocular by the sea, the first thing to weigh is waterproofing and salt spray. The marine environment is the natural enemy of any telescope: salt spray is highly corrosive, humidity is high, and temperature swings cause condensation inside the optical tube. Choose a nitrogen-purged, waterproof model, and wipe the housing with fresh water promptly after use, because crystallized sea salt will eat into the rubber armoring and the threads.
The second consideration is objective lens diameter. Coastal viewing mostly happens in daylight, but brightness still matters: the sea reflects a lot of light, and a large objective paired with good coatings helps suppress glare off the water so targets on the surface look clearer. Within your budget, go for 42mm or larger.
Magnification depends on what you plan to do. Sitting by the shore taking in the view and watching nearby boats, 10x is comfortable and dependable. If your goal is distant lighthouses, freighters and the occasional naval vessel passing through, you can move up to 12-16x, but do pair it with a tripod, because the wind at the coast is strong and a high-magnification image will shake too much to be usable in hand.
There is a more advanced way to observe at sea: identifying passing vessels. Use the telescope to read the ship's name and port of registry on the stern, then check a ship-tracking app to see where the vessel came from and where it is headed. That is the next level of enjoyment in coastal viewing. It calls for at least 15-20x magnification and steady support, so it suits someone sitting on a breakwater with time to spare.
One last reminder that is unique to the seaside: never change eyepieces or leave the optical tube open on the sand. A single grain of sand working its way into the focus mechanism turns a romantic day at the beach into a frustrating repair. If you use your optics on the sand, step back onto firm ground before handling anything.
