How to Clean a Monocular Telescope: The Right Order for Wiping the Objective and Eyepiece

Over time, dust settles on the objective lens of a monocular telescope, and eyelash oil and eyelid grease end up on the eyepiece. It is almost unavoidable. But many people's first instinct, breathing on the lens and wiping it with a tissue, is exactly the worst thing you can do to the optics.

The first step in any proper cleaning routine is never wiping. It is blowing. Use an air blower to remove loose dust from the lens surface, and that alone will solve half the problem. Loose dust contains many hard mineral particles, and dragging a cloth across it is like running fine sandpaper over the coatings.

Only stains that will not blow away, such as fingerprints, grease marks, and water spots, move on to the second step: wiping. Choose a lens cloth or a lens pen, and for a more thorough job, use a lens cleaning solution. The technique is light, slow, and circular: press gently on the center of the lens and spiral outward in one direction. Do not scrub back and forth.

As for the order, clean the eyepiece first, then the objective lens. The eyepiece is smaller, its coatings are more delicate, and it is the spot where eye oil builds up most easily. The objective lens is larger and faces forward, so it usually collects more dust than grease.

There are two things you should never use: paper napkins and the corner of your shirt. Paper napkins have coarse wood fibers, and a shirt corner carries dust from everything around you. The microscopic scratches they leave are invisible to the eye, but over time they add up and make the lens look hazier with each use. Never rinse the body with water either. Water can seep through the focus wheel and the gaps in the barrel into the optical chamber.

It is also important to control how often you clean. If there is no visible stain on the lens, do not wipe it. Every wipe uses up a little of the coating's lifespan. The right approach is to put the lens cap back on after use and reduce contamination at the source. Folding up the eyecup and securing the objective cap can block 90% of the dirt.

Finally, if fungus or a cloudy white patch appears on the lens and will not come off, the problem is inside the optical chamber. Do not take it apart yourself. The lens groups in a monocular telescope are cemented and assembled with collimation, and disassembling it basically means ruining it. The right solution is to send it to after-sales service or a professional.
