Stiff or Sticky Focus on Your Monocular? Four Steps to Service the Focus Mechanism
After a year or two of use, many people notice the focus wheel on their monocular starting to feel gritty, and at some point along the travel it gives a little jolt. The most common cause is not a broken part, but dust.
The focus mechanism is the only part of a telescope that has to move, and there is a natural gap between the focus wheel and the barrel. Outdoor dust and sand get carried into the track as the wheel turns, mix with the existing damping grease, and form a paste that works like grinding compound. The more you use it, the rougher it feels.
Four steps for dealing with mild stiffness at home. First, aim an air blower at the gap around the focus wheel and blow repeatedly to clear the loose dust on the surface. Second, turn the focus wheel slowly from one end of its travel to the other, repeating the full sweep a dozen or so times so the grease inside redistributes. Third, with the heavier end facing down, tap the barrel lightly against a table a few times (with a soft cloth underneath) to shake out sand trapped in the gap. Fourth, blow out the dust again and test the wheel. Most early-stage stiffness can be cured with these four steps.
One hard rule deserves special emphasis: never drip lubricating oil, WD-40 or sewing machine oil into the focus wheel yourself. Oil is incompatible with the factory damping grease; once diluted, it can seep into the optical chamber and onto the lenses, and the whole instrument is ruined. Nor should you casually use so-called telescope-specific grease, since damping formulas differ from one manufacturer to another.
When must it go in for repair? Three cases: the focus wheel spins freely but the image does not change (the drive mechanism has come loose); the wheel locks up at a fixed position and will not turn (an internal part has shifted out of place); or the focus feels gritty and crystalline after water has entered the barrel (moisture dried and left deposits). In these three cases there is no room for DIY.
Prevention is simpler than cure. After use in dusty or sandy conditions, blow the instrument off before putting it away. When storing it, set the focus wheel to the middle of its travel so the track retracts into the barrel. If it will sit unused for a long time, put it in a sealed bag with a desiccant.
With good habits, the focus mechanism of a monocular can serve smoothly for more than ten years. Like people, what it fears is not heavy use, but the wrong kind of care.
