Choosing a Telescope for the Moon and Stars: Astronomy Basics for Beginners
Scroll past a video of a lens pressed up against the lunar surface, craters sharp and clear, and it is tempting to order an astronomy telescope on the spot. But before you buy, get three basic concepts straight. Only then can you tell real capability from marketing talk.
The first is aperture. Aperture, the diameter of the objective lens, determines how much light the telescope gathers. The larger the aperture, the more stars you see and the brighter they appear. Think of it as the pupil of an eye: your pupils widen at night to let in more light. For beginners, 70-80mm is enough to view the Moon and planets, and if you plan to take it seriously, start at 114mm. Make sure the figure refers to the effective aperture, since some sellers quote the outer diameter of the tube instead.
The second is the useful magnification limit. A telescope has a practical ceiling of roughly twice its aperture in millimetres. An 80mm scope tops out at about 160x; push past that and the image only gets softer. If you see a claim like "up to 1200x high definition," scroll on. What really shapes the viewing experience is the eyepiece. Swapping in a wide-angle eyepiece to observe a star cluster beats blindly chasing magnification every time.
The third is the mount. High-magnification astronomy demands a solid mount. The common choices are the alt-azimuth mount, which you push by hand to find targets and which is inexpensive and easy to use, and the equatorial mount, which tracks the rotation of the sky and costs more but suits long observing sessions. For a beginner, a starter scope on a stable alt-azimuth mount with sturdy tripod legs is a far better bet than a large tube sitting on a flimsy tripod.
If your goal is simply bright targets such as lunar craters and Saturn's rings, a 20-60x zoom spotting scope on a tripod will do the job, and by day it doubles as a scope for birdwatching and scenery.
