Using Binoculars in Winter: Tips to Prevent Frost and Fog in Cold Weather

Using binoculars in a northern winter brings three problems you will not meet in other seasons: frost on the lenses, caused by your breath and temperature differences; a body that feels stiff, because the grease thickens in the cold; and rubber that turns brittle and cracks. All of these have solutions, and low temperatures do not have to put binoculars out of action.

The number one enemy is condensation from temperature differences. Carry your binoculars straight out of a heated room and the body is warmer than the air around it, so moisture condenses on the lenses at once. Come back indoors from the cold and it is worse: the chilled glass meets warm, damp indoor air and fogs over completely. The key is to let the temperature change gradually. Before you go out, leave the binoculars for 20 minutes somewhere in between, such as a hallway or the car, so they can cool down first. When you come back in, keep them in the bag instead of pulling them out right away.

Frost from your breath during observation is another issue. When you bring your eyes close to the eyepiece, the moisture in your breath freezes on the glass, and the more you wipe, the worse it gets. A useful trick is to breathe to the side: if the eyepiece is at your right eye, turn your face to the left to exhale. Cover the eyepieces between viewing sessions. If frost has already formed, press a dry lens cloth gently against the eyepiece to absorb the moisture rather than rubbing it, then press again once the frost has melted into droplets.

Nitrogen-purged, waterproof models have a physical advantage in winter: the optical chamber is sealed and dry, so it cannot fog up inside. Fogging inside the barrel in cold weather is clear evidence that moisture is trapped within, and ordinary sealed binoculars show this weakness plainly in winter. If you live in the north, nitrogen purging is one feature worth paying for.

Then there are the mechanical effects of the cold. A stiff focus wheel is the normal result of grease thickening, not a fault, and it usually eases after half an hour of use outdoors. In extreme cold, below -20°C, avoid turning the focus quickly through a large range; let the mechanism warm up before you operate it normally.

Protect the rubber parts as well. In low temperatures the armouring hardens and cracks more easily on impact. In winter, avoid dropping the binoculars while fumbling with gloves on, and do not squeeze the body when packing them away. A thin coat of acrylic silicone conditioner once a year can slow the ageing of the rubber.

A further note for battery-powered models. In binoculars with an electronic compass or image stabilisation, battery life is cut roughly in half by the cold. Keeping spare batteries in an inside pocket is standard practice for any electronic gear used outdoors in winter.

Finally, a winter bonus. Cold air is exceptionally clear, and the winter night sky offers the best stargazing of the year. Follow the cold-weather and fog-control habits above, and the winter stars will reward you with the sharpest views of all.
