Rainy Seasons and Rainforests: Keeping Binoculars Free of Fungus and Fog in Humid Conditions

When you use binoculars during the southern rainy season or in a tropical rainforest, the enemy is not the rain but the damp. Moisture is everywhere, and it attacks your optics from two directions: condensation on the outside and fungus on the inside.

Let's start with how fungus grows inside. Mold spores are everywhere, and all they need is humidity above 65 percent, a suitable temperature, and organic nutrients such as the oils from fingerprints and settled dust on the lenses. A humid environment supplies all three, so mold begins to grow on the inner walls of the barrel and on the lens surfaces, and its filaments feed on the coatings. That is what people really mean when they say a lens has grown fur.

The first line of defense against fungus is nitrogen purging and waterproof sealing. A nitrogen-purged, sealed barrel contains no oxygen and no moisture, so mold cannot survive. This is why buyers in humid regions should choose a nitrogen-purged model. It is not a feature that keeps the binoculars working in the rain; it is a feature that keeps the inside of the barrel sterile. How to tell: only models whose specifications say nitrogen-purged, waterproof qualify. Those that say only waterproof or splash-proof are most likely just sealed against splashes.

External condensation is a daily fact of life in the rainforest. When the body of the binoculars is cooler than the ambient dew point, the lens surfaces fog up instantly. The answer is to warm them up gradually. Before you leave an air-conditioned room or step out of a warm bed on a cold morning, put the binoculars in your bag so the temperature changes slowly. If they have already fogged up, do not wipe them, since wiping only smears them further. Let them sit until the temperature rises and the fog clears on its own.

Three rules for using optics in humid conditions. First, keep the lens caps on and open them only while you are actually observing, so less moisture gets in. Second, keep your lens cloth dry, because wiping a lens with a damp cloth is like sowing seeds for mold. Third, do not seal the binoculars away the same day you use them. Leave them open to the air for a few hours first, then move them into a dry environment.

The standard drying routine once you are back in the city: wipe the body dry, open the eyepiece and objective caps, let the binoculars air out in a ventilated spot for more than four hours, then store them sealed with desiccant. A special reminder for anyone back from the rainforest: moisture may be hiding in the gaps in the body. Air them out before storing them. Sealing them straight away is the same as locking the damp inside to grow mold.

For a long-term solution, users in the south can get an electronic dry cabinet, available at the hundred-yuan level, as a shared dormitory for binoculars and camera lenses, holding humidity steady at 45 to 55 percent. Without a dry cabinet, a sealed box plus reusable color-changing silica gel desiccant works well enough. Remember to check the color of the silica gel every month, and dry it out or replace it once it stops working.

One last word for users in humid regions: binoculars are not worn out by use, they are ruined by storage. In a damp climate, the lifespan of your optics is a score that reflects your drying habits.
