Fungus on Microscope Lenses: Moisture Control and Treatment
The greatest enemy of a microscope is not dust, but mold. Users in the south know this feeling well: once the rainy season passes, web-like shadows appear in the eyepiece view. The mold filaments have already taken up residence on the lens. And because mold feeds on the coating and the glass itself, the longer you wait, the deeper the damage.
Where mold comes from: airborne mold spores, plus humidity above 65%, plus organic residue (fingerprint oils, gum mounting media). When all three are present, mold will grow on the lens. A microscope in daily use, with someone keeping an eye on it, is usually not a big problem. The most dangerous period is when it sits idle in a cabinet for months.
There is a simple way to tell where the mold is. Rotate the eyepiece: if the shadow rotates with it, the mold is on the eyepiece. Turn the nosepiece to switch objectives: if the shadow disappears, the mold is on the objective. If it does not move at all, the mold is on the prism or in the optical path, which is the most troublesome case and requires professional disassembly and repair.
Can it be saved? That depends on how deep it goes. Early, light mold spots (a few filaments, a small hazy patch) can be largely removed if treated promptly. Mature, widespread mold has already eaten into the glass surface, and even after cleaning it will leave permanent etched marks. So the core strategy is always one word: prevent.
Three key steps for mold prevention. First, store in a dry environment: a dry cabinet, or a sealed box with desiccant, is the most economical option, and mold stops growing once humidity is kept below 50%. Second, clean before storing: wipe off fingerprints and oils after use, since these are the mold's food, and do not leave the spores a culture medium. Third, power it on regularly: with LED models, use the microscope once a week. The heat and airflow from the light source are themselves a moisture barrier, which is why frequent use actually makes a microscope last longer.
Handling light mold yourself (limited to the outer eyepiece surface and the front element of the objective): dip a lens tissue in a small amount of lens cleaning solution and gently wipe the affected area in one direction, changing the tissue several times. If the mold is inside the lens groups, do not take it apart yourself. Microscope lens groups demand extremely high concentricity, and once disassembled they cannot be reassembled properly, which means the instrument is ruined. Leave internal cleaning to a professional repair service.
Finally, consider the cost. A well-maintained microscope commonly lasts more than a decade, while replacing an eyepiece assembly can cost a third of the price of the whole unit. A dry cabinet plus desiccant costs only a few dozen yuan a year, making it the highest-return insurance a microscope owner can buy.
